Scenes from Angels in America, colored pencil on black paper

Concept: I wanted to represent Faustus's slow descent to hell with a raked stage leading from full stage height down to the audience's level. This set will be painted to look like coals are smoldering across the stage. Sigils hide in the coals, painted so that they will glow when hit with blacklights during particularly magival scenes. A large clock ticks to show the passage of time in the play, counting down to Faustus's death and reminding the audience of the deal he made. Besides the paint and backdrop, the set is otherwise bare except for two twenty foot angels that loom towards the back. These are the characters of "Good Angel" and "Bad Angel." I wanted to steer away from the idea of two little angels on Faustus's shoulder and have the angels be massive sculptural pieces that watch the action onstage. The Good Angel has a platform in its base. Characters can exit and enter from this upper level onto the main stage. The Bad Angel has a trapdoor beneath its cage-like base. Faustus is dragged here at the end of the play and drops to hell with his final plea of "I'll burn my books!"
